Ds 106- Reflection Paper

All too soon the end has come. Ds 106, the most popular online class in UMW is officially over for the Spring semester. Just like everyone else, when I heard of a class class Digital story telling, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, yet it sounded interesting and so I was immediately drawn to it.

While I set up this site primarily for the purpose of school work, I also make sure that in every assignment, I incorporate things that I love like my family and where I come from. Class started slow as usual, students had to get their site up and running, registering for stuff and making whatever necessary downloads. I thought it was strange that Alan wasn’t around during the first two weeks of class, yet, he still made it a point to skype in (thanks to Jim Groom)  to get to know all of us and help with whatever questions we had. First of all, I think the reading on our personal cyberinfrastructure was a great way to introduce the class and what it entails.

I personally loved the fact that our websites served as a ‘dumping site for our work”. Unlike other classes, we can always go back an edit what has already been done, see and compare our work with others. I mean, how cool is that?My favorite part of this class was the video on “Everything is a Remix”. Being that I am normally apprehensive about using other peoples work, I found  this video to be very comforting, as in, encouraging me to be independent as an artist yet drawing inspiration from what other people have done.

I loved the daily creates, although after a while, they got pretty boring and I personally stopped doing them. However, I think they got me to explore the creative side of me, assignments like taking a picture upside down, editing pictures to look completely opposite to what they originally look like. It was all about being creative and I know that personally I got very very creative with a lot of the assignments. I appreciate the fact that the daily creates weren’t one way. There were times when we had an audio daily create, visual, or video. The alternating options were great. Also, it’s great that after  while, Alan gave us the option of doing 3 daily creates in a week instead of 7.

My favorite assignments were the visuals and design assignments,  It’s very commendable that we had a class bank where we had a wide range of assignments that others had done to choose from. I am not exactly sure how I feel about having to do 15 stars worth of assignments in a week and having to do 30 stars of video work. Not only was it time consuming, but I say myself doing the same things over and over and after  awhile, it got pretty boring.

The most challenging part of this class was working on the radio shows. It was a lot of fun and my most favorite part of any assignment so far. On the flip side, class  got very boring after spring break, all we did was listen to radio shows and give input which most of us didn’t have anyway. What I was hoping for was for class to be more hands on, instead of bringing our laptops to class and checking emails and face booking and doing everything else aside ds106. I think that in the future, we should still bring our laptops to class but do most of the assignments within the 1 hour 15 minute period. This way, should we have any issues, the teacher is right there to help and so are our class mates. Students who do not come to class will loose credit  for that day and not be allowed to make up for the time lost. By doing so, you will ensure that students are always punctual to class  and are guaranteed that when students are in class, they are doing nothing else but work.

Bless you heart Jim and Alan. I remember my mum once saying how cool is it that you are taking  a college class that allows you to express yourself and your interest in whatever way you can. A sentiment  I share in. We weren’t confined to one particular style of doing things, our blogs could be whatever we wanted it to be and we could express ourselves on whatever way we wanted.

I have gained a lot out of this class. There are so many things I can now do on photoshop, picasa, and most especially audacity. I am still struggling a little bit with video editing but I still have certainly come a long way. Currently, I am helping my cousin build his own site for a small business he’s setting up.

Digital story telling certainly means telling a story about anything using tools and technology, making things come to life through technology. My other best assignment was creating any image that represents an expression of ourselves. Show me one class on UMW that allows you to be yourself and I will be willing to be that it’s ds106.

To the future students of ds106, embrace this class with all you have and experience the chance to work with amazing people like Jim Groom and Alan Levine. Do your work on time, participate a lot, be engaged through twitter, ask questions when in doubt. Go to class, be creative with assignments, and have fun experiencing what it is like to have a personal cyberinfrastructure.

Song Visualizatin( Video Assignment)

Whoever created this assignment is a genius. Somehow I have never visualized any song that I have heard but this assignment got me doing so. We were supposed to combine a series of pictures that tell the story of the song in question.  I like to think of it this way, if a deaf person were to see the image compilation, they should be able to imagine the song being played.

For this assignment, I chose to use one of my very favorite songs by Beyonce called “Flaws and All”. I play this song always in memory of everyone that loves me despite my “Flaws and All”

While it wasn’t the easiest assignment to do out there, the only problem I encountered was splitting the images to ensure that they coincidence the lyrics of the song. I also had to make sure I was using the right images which with the abundance of pictures of flickr made my work and that fun.

See Tutorials for how its done.

What makes me laugh- Video Assignment

Yeah yeah, am sure I bore you all with my love for African stuff. Then again what do you expect? Am 100% African and a proud one as such. The purpose of this assignment was to share a video that makes me laugh.

This video am sharing with you is an except from a Nigerian movie called “Osuofia In London. In the part I show you, this man immigrates from a remote village in Nigeria to London, upon seeing the London bridge, he is so amazed by the fancy stuff that he literally stands and stares while everyone else goes about their business. It’s funny because normally movies depict fictional stuff but shockingly is the same reaction most people have the first time they travel outside their countries. I usually watch this movie when I want to have a good laugh just because. And in some way, it reminds me of some of the funny reactions I had to things the first time I traveled abroad. Hey, when you are little, certain things can be excused right?

Tutorials for “King of the Meltdowns”.

Undoubtedly one of the easiest assignments you can find in this category.

1. Search the internet for awkward celebrity pictures or moments. When you find the picture, save it.

2. Now you have the option of looking for jokes that are made by the celebrity on the internet that coincidentally fit the picture you have in hand or put your creative skills to use and come up with one. The point is to be really funny.

3. Upload picture onto Ms Paint or photo shop and then add caption. Save, upload onto flickr and you are all set.

4 Try to use bold fonts and colors for the caption so they are easy to read.

King of the Meltdowns.LOL!

When it comes to creating catchy phrase for my assignments I suck at it and I proudly admit that. This assignment got me laughing after it was done. Am a night owl, I only function when its dark and there are no distractions around. Thus, I watch a lot of late night shows. ie David Letterman, Chelsea lately, Conan O”Brien and Jay Leno. While I was thinking of what assignment to post under “visual assignment”, I thought of another assignment under visuals called ‘ the big caption”. We were required to take a picture from a website and add lyrics from a top 100 chart song that best describes the picture. I immediately thought well, why not do something similar yet different from ” the big caption”.

I immediately thought, why not create an assignment where people can link celebrity pictures to jokes that are made about them. Who better to use than Donald Trump, I can’t get past his hair, this man can afford a comb, hair strengthener, conditioner and shampoo yet his hair is always wild and about. To find the appropriate joke for this picture, I did a little bit of research and found the perfect joke for this image. I like to have fun when creating assignments.

Tutorials for “Loud Mouth”

1.Before you start putting things together, take a moment to sit down and plan what story you want to tell using the music lyrics.

2. After this is done, formulate questions and be careful in finding the right lyrics to answer the questions. Be more creative by showing versatility in the songs you choose, they shouldn’t all be RnB or hip/hop, choose a little bit from all genres if possible.

3Download the tracks from youtube using zamzar.com if you do not already have them on your computer.

4. If you happen to already have the songs on your computer, convert them into wave using zamzar.com. I find it easier to work with in audacity when they are in wav format.

5. After you do this, carefully import the songs one by one into audacity and trim them leaving only the part you want to use for your soundstory. We have all used audacity before for previous assignments and so this shouldn’t be hard for us to do.

6. After you do this for all the songs, you are not done yet. You have to still record your part- the questions. One way you could do this is to record your part as you put the files together, or, record all ur questions or whatever you are saying and save them in an order that makes sense for you to use.

7. The difficult part lies in aligning the sound tracks to make sense and in the order they are supposed to be in.

Hopefully this works, let loose and make it fun!

Loud Mouth

What in the world was I thinking when I decided to do this assignment? It is fun and it turned out a lot better in the end than I anticipated. So the purpose of this assignment is to tell a story using lyrics from different songs by different artistes. Although this was fun, it takes a lot of creativity to put together, you must first think of the story you want to tell, the questions you want answered and the songs out there that have lyrics that can answer these questions. You also have to be creative in the sense that you do not use only songs in the same genre. Some of the songs can be hip/hop, RnB, dancehall etc. As you can see from the list below, I used songs from different artistes to be a lot more versatile.

1. That way—Wale
2. Marcus Canty- Won’t make a fool out of you
3. Chris brown—sweet love
4. R Kelly—Worlds Greatest
5. Dru hill—I love you.
6. Blackstreet- Before I let you go
7. Yin yang twin—peanut butter jelly time
8. Jadakiss ft. Cassidy—Can I talk to you
9. Jay Ghatey—I don’t give a damn

As I have made it known in the past, I hate listening to my voice play back and so I made my bff record the question part after writing the script.  As to why I decided to name this assignment “Loud mouth”, I  have no idea.. LOL! Enjoy and look out for the tutorials.

Tutorials for “Flag it Up”

1. Choose the country flag you would love to “remix’

2.  Try to maintain some sort of originality. Mine for instance, I kept the stars as well as the colors red, yellow and green.

3. Try finding something unique to the country and incorporate it in there.. In mine, I used the “Coat of Arms”. unique to Ghana alone and now widely known.

4. Be creative about it. Now that you have all your elements assembled, go to Ms Paint if you use Windows and put them together. You can also use Picnic or Photoshop. I find Ms paint easier to use.

5. If possible, assemble the old and new flag together and let your viewers decide.

“FLAG IT UP”

Do you hate the flag of your country?  Well I do and so for this assignment, I request that you make a new flag on behalf of your dear country. Think of it this way, the President of your country walks up to you and says “Abbie, help us design a new flag that will stand out amongst that of many other countries. It doesn’t necessarily have to be your country’s flag, chose a flag from a country you’ve visited before, or one that you wish to visit someday. You all know I love Ghana my motherland, aside the heat, the other thing I really hate is our flag, it’s too simple and a lot of other African countries have the same flag. It makes it hard for Ghana’s flag to stand out and so I decided to make a new flag which believe it or not I plan to email to the Ghana Embassy to be considered as a replacement since most people like my “remixed version”. I respect my country so much and so I stuck to the original colors, red, gold(yellow) and green. I also replaced the star in the middle with our Coat of Arms which is unique to Ghana alone. 1957 is also when we officially gained Independence from the British and put an end to slavery. Whew! had to throw that in there.
To help you judge, I put both flags side by side, I will not tell you which one is mine but vote on it and hopefully mine wins. Goodluck! This is a fun assignment and shouldn’t take long to complete.

Audio Show Review-LBD

For this  audio-review assignment, I chose to critique the radio show “Life before death”, mainly because this show got me thinking about the many things I need to do before dying and to start crossing things off my list. Another funny reason is because I like picking on Kierra, one of the team members:-)

First of all , this was an interesting show to listen to. You begun with a popular song that I deem as an attention grabber and very audience relevant, if am driving or near a radio and happen to hear this song play, I would definitely want to tune the radio to this station to listen to the show. That being said, I felt you could do more with your introduction, it sounded as if you jumped right into the program without giving your audience an idea of what the show is about. It’s like writing a paper without a thesis, the “thesis” or in the case, the preview acquaints your audience with the chain of events about to unfold.

I commend you for the fact that you each as presenters introduced yourselves to the audience., it reminds me of what radio-show presenters do in present day. Seems like you are the only group that did that.  Audibility wise, I found your voices to be very shaky, and there was a lack of consistency  as well.  Unlike other radio shows that jumped into the call-in segment right away, you guys chose a different route by asking eachother what you would each do before death. I thought this was fun but perhaps you could have had a call-in segment where listeners could call and in and be asked questions, or, you could read out questions that people may have sent to you.

While it sounded fun to listen to, overall it sounded too playful for my taste. I do acknowledge that you made an effort to make this as  audience engaging as possible, nonetheless, you seem to have lost sight of the fact that this was also an assignment you would be graded on and creativity counts a lot( was that too harsh?).

Content wise, the show sounded very two-sided, almost all of the interaction was between Colin and Kierra, and I felt that the other members of the team could have found other ways to be creative. For instance, one of you could have held you own segment where you read interview responses from people on the said topic.

Instead of the frequent awkward pauses which left me wondering the worse and would probably have changed the station if I could, what you could have done was add some sound effects, not necessarily music, but there are so many sounds in freesounds.org that will fit your topic choice perfectly.

Your radio show poster was a little too plain for such a controversial show, something more catchy and complimentary to the  nature of the show I believe would have been  a lot more appreciated.

Kierra and Colin took on the leadership roles in the group and I believe that they both did their best to execute it as best as they could. Instead of just presenting your free-run as your final project, you could have recorded and recorded yourselves over and over again, till you attained that level of “good enough” to present to the class. The extra recordings you do not used could have been put in your documentary on the making of the show and some of the challenges you faced.

I did however enjoy listening to you guys!
